Extreme weather events, threats of cyber-terrorism to energy infrastructure, the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and the rapidly changing economics of the energy industry have called attention to the inadequacies of the U.S. electric utility industry. While it is clear that the electricity industry must adapt to such changes, the future of the industry is not clear.
This symposium will address the future of the US electric utility industry, with a focus on potential changes to utility regulations and business models. Four panels will discuss specific business models for the future, possibly needed regulatory reform to enable the transformation, financial implications of this transformation to utility investors, regulators and the general public, and the effects on wholesale power markets.
Organized by the Environmental Law Society and Environmental Law Journal, in collaboration with the Guarini Center on Environmental and Land Use Law.
Speakers will include: Audrey Zibelman (New York State Public Service Commission); Michael Gergen ’92 (Latham & Watkins); Diane Munns (Environmental Defense Fund); Paul Centolella (Analysis Group); Peter Zschokke (National Grid); Lynne Kiesling (Northwestern University); Allen Freifeld (Viridity Energy); David O’Brien (BRIDGE Energy); Michael Burr (Public Utilities Fortnightly); John McMahon (Long Island Power Authority); Glen Grabelsky (Fitch Ratings); and Michael Lapides (Goldman Sachs).
