Mary Holland, Director of the Graduate Lawyering Program, invites you to an informal lunch to learn about opportunities to work with LLM students as a Teaching Assistant during 2014-15 in fall, winter, and spring. Read on for detailed description of position and information on how to apply.

Information Session
Date: Friday, March 28
Time: 12:30 – 2:00
Location: Vanderbilt Hall, Room 109
(Lunch will be served)

To apply, send resume, transcript, and writing sample to Jesus Ballivian at jesus.ballivian@nyu.edu.

The Graduate Lawyering Program is seeking rising 2Ls and 3Ls to serve as teaching assistants for LLM students. There will be 10 sections in the fall, three intensive sections that meet for one week in January (the week before the start of spring classes), and one section in the spring semester. The course has three different levels as described below. These classes meet for two hours every other week; the Intensive level meets for 2 hours each week.

  • Graduate Lawyering – Foundational: for LLM students who have not yet practiced extensively in English. (1 credit; two hours every other week)
  • Graduate Lawyering – Experienced Practitioners: for those who have extensive practice experience in English. (1 credit; two hours every other week)
  • Graduate Lawyering – Intensive: for those who want to pay rigorous attention to their writing and analytical skills in the first semester. (2 credits; two hours every week)

Professors Mary Holland, Irene Ayers, Karen Ross, and Hon. Gerald Lebovits will teach these classes. The course will focus on legal research, writing and analysis. Under faculty supervision, TAs will have substantial responsibility in reviewing written work and providing feedback to students. TAs will also work with students on their ongoing writing projects, advising on structure, content, and style, as well as providing instruction on legal citation. TAs will work closely with faculty in a collegial atmosphere.

The Program seeks JDs with strong research, writing and analytical skills, together with excellent people skills. TAs will receive credit towards their JD degree. TAs must assist for at least two credits in order to receive one credit towards their degree. Because of the differing course offerings, there are a number of different ways to fulfill the credit requirements.

The Graduate Lawyering courses are for international LLM students and are required for most foreign-trained attorneys expecting to sit for the New York Bar exam. The course employs the same teaching methodologies as the 1L Lawyering Program, but is streamlined and refined specifically for international graduate students. The LLM students are typically lawyers admitted to the bar in other countries and generally have two or more years of practice experience. Many LLM students are non-native English speakers, with varying expertise in US legal research and writing. These students are eager to learn about the American legal system and culture and to get to know JDs who may be in their other classes.

Working with the Law School’s LLM students is both personally and professionally rewarding, providing the opportunity to start a global professional network while still in law school. It is an excellent opportunity for those with teaching aspirations, and it will give all TAs a chance to focus on their own legal research, writing and analytical skills in the context of helping others.

To apply, please send your resume, transcript and a writing sample to Jesus Ballivian, administrative assistant to Mary Holland, at jesus.ballivian@nyu.edu. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mary Holland, Director of the Graduate Lawyering Program, at mary.holland@nyu.edu.
