Lauren Burke, an energetic and inspiring NYU Law ’09 alumna, Founder of Atlas: DIY, Developing Immigrant Youth, and PILC Practitioner-in-Residence, will be hosting CHILLS every Friday. Each week CHILLS will offer wine and cheese and a chance to chat with Lauren and a rotating group of NYU Law graduates who are now public interest practitioners.

This week, Lauren will be joined by Scott Elana Wilf ’12 and Scott Welfel ’13. Elana is a Staff Attorney at the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender, and Scott is a Skadden Fellow/Staff Attorney at the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice.
Elana Wilf is an Assistant Deputy Public Defender at the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender in Union County, where she works on juvenile delinquency cases. Elana graduated from NYU School of Law in 2012 and clerked for the New Jersey Supreme Court. During law school, Elana participated in the Juvenile Defender Clinic and the Children’s Rights Clinic. She also interned at The Door Legal Services (under the superb guidance of the one-and-only Lauren A. Burke) and the Juvenile Law Center in Philadelphia.
Scott Welfel is a Skadden Fellow/Staff Attorney at the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice His fellowship is focused on removing barriers to employment for veterans and individuals with criminal records. In addition to supporting the policy work of the Institute in these areas, he assists individuals with criminal records in restoring their driver licenses, expunging their records, applying for certificates of rehabilitation, appealing denials of occupational and professional licenses, and general employment law issues related to their criminal records.
Scott received his J.D. cum laude from New York University School of Law in May 2013, where he was a student advocate at the Federal Defender Clinic. Prior to law school, he taught at North Star Academy Charter School in Newark through Princeton AlumniCorps, worked as a field organizer in Colorado on President Obama’s first presidential campaign, and coordinated the Abandoned Properties Project for the City of Newark. He received his undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Princeton University in 2006. He is admitted to the bars of New Jersey and New York.
