Regularly during the school year, the Dean hosts roundtable discussions with prominent guests who have utilized their law degrees in a variety of nontraditional ways. Over lunch with a small group of students, guests speak autobiographically about their work experiences, sharing valuable insight about how they found their chosen path. Please note that the roundtables are informal and off-the-record.

Katherine Trager ’74, who will be the Dean’s guest on Thursday, April 10th, is the Executive Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel of Penguin Random House LLC, the world’s largest trade book publisher. She is responsible for all legal matters concerning Penguin Random House. For eleven years prior to the Penguin/Random House merger, Katherine was Senior Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel of Random House, Inc.

In addition, Ms. Trager is counsel to the National Book Foundation. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of New Visions for Public Schools. From 1987 through 2000, Katherine was Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of Random House, responsible for key publishing divisions and corporate matters. During a two year period away from Random House, Katherine obtained her Master’s degree as a Reading Specialist from Columbia University and taught in a Harlem elementary school.

Prior to joining Random House, Katherine was Vice President Publishing Counsel at Macmillan, Inc., responsible for all of Macmillan’s publishing law issues. Katherine came to Macmillan after serving as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Katherine began her career as an associate at Satterlee & Stephens, a firm specializing in media issues. She obtained her JD from NYU Law in 1974.

The Dean’s roundtables are open to 18 interested NYU School of Law JD and graduate students. In order to achieve a representational mix of students, we will designate a proportionate number of seats to JD students and graduate students, respectively, to be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. The roundtables begin at 12:30 P.M. in Snow Dining Room. If you would like to attend a roundtable, please sign up in advance by emailing Alexandria Trempe at lexi.trempe@nyu.edu. Please indicate whether you are a JD or graduate student, and whether you have any dietary restrictions.
