The Just Security Blog (http://www.justsecurity.org), an online forum for high-level discussion of law, rights, and U.S. national security based at the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice and the NYU School of Law, is now accepting applications for up to two legal research assistants (“RAs”) for the fall semester 2014. Just Security RAs will primarily be responsible for (i) providing research support to Just Security staff, the senior editorial team, and other contributors; (ii) developing and updating Just Security’s resource libraries, including Books We’ve Read and Editors’ Picks Reading Lists; and (iii) assisting in the maintenance of the Just Security site.
The Just Security staff is composed of a small team; therefore, research assistants will be expected and encouraged to take ownership of other individual projects. Additional opportunities will be available to RAs who are interested and have proven themselves capable of further responsibilities (such as the occasional opportunity to write informative posts for the blog).
The position will be paid on an hourly basis. Preference will be given to applicants based in New York or Washington, D.C, although exceptional and qualified candidates from other locations may apply.
Timing/Hours:
Start and end dates are flexible to accommodate applicants’ class schedules, including exams, but we ask that all candidates be available for the fall 2014 semester. Contingent upon performance and availability, there is a possibility to continue in the position beyond the fall semester.
Research assistants will be expected to work fifteen (15) to twenty (20) hours per week.
Qualifications:
Ideal candidates will be second- or third-year law students with a demonstrated interest in U.S. national security issues. Successful candidates will have strong research and writing skills, and applicants with prior relevant work experience are strongly preferred. Experience with WordPress is preferred, but not required.
To Apply:
To apply for the position, please send the following materials to staff@justsecurity.org with the subject line “Just Security Research Assistant Position”:
◦ cover letter indicating your interest in working for Just Security and availability (include the days and hours you are available and approximate start);
◦ resume and the names of three references; and
◦ brief writing sample.
Please note that applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. However, all applications must be received by September 7, 2014. Due to the high volume of applications we receive, only those candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.
