The Jean-Pictet Competition is hosted by the International Committee of the Red Cross and is a unique opportunity to gain in-depth and hands-on knowledge of international humanitarian law (IHL). The competition is a week-long training event on IHL, consisting in “taking law out of the books”, by simulations and role plays, allowing the Competition jury to evaluate teams’ theoretical knowledge and practical understanding of IHL. The situations are founded on fictitious but realistic scenarios of armed conflict. Students should consult the competition website at http://www.concourspictet.org/index_en.htm for further information. The Jean Pictet Competition will be held on March 28 to April 4, 2015 in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The Clara Barton Competition is in its second year and is hosted by the American Red Cross. It follows the model of the Jean-Pictet Competition. Students should consult the competition website at http://www.redcross.org/rulesofwar/clara-barton-international-humanitarian-law-competition. The Clara Barton Competition will be held on March 14-17, 2015 in Chicago, Illinois.
NYU School of Law will select an NYU Team to compete in both competitions. This process is coordinated by the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice (CHRGJ). Each team will be comprised of three law students. It will be the responsibility of both NYU Teams to apply to participate in the relevant Competition and if accepted, to prepare itself for the Competition. All full-time NYU law students based in New York are eligible to apply to be a member of the NYU Teams. The Hauser Global Law School Program will pay the registration fee and transportation expenses for each Team; both Competitions provide housing and food for participants during the event.
The selection of the NYU Teams will not guarantee participation in either the Pictet or Barton Competitions. The Team will be required to complete a separate, substantive application process that will be defined by the competition organizers, who ultimately decide which teams are invited to compete. The 2015 Pictet application will be due no later than November 5, 2014. The process for the 2015 Barton Competition are expected to be announced on September 15, but the application will be due no later than November 14, 2014.
The application for inclusion on the NYU Teams for the Pictet and Barton Competitions can be found on the CHRGJ website: http://chrgj.org/opportunities/students/jean-pictet-competition/.
In summary: All full-time NYU law students based in New York are eligible to apply. Applications are due on Monday, September 22, by 9:00 AM. After a review of the applications, finalists will be selected and interviewed during the week of September 29, with selection of the NYU Teams thereafter.
