LLM Pro Bono Placement – International Rescue Committee – Immigration Legal Intern (Fall)
- The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading non-sectarian non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. IRC staff and volunteers provide shelter, medical and public health assistance, education, training and income-generating programs for refugees in nearly 30 countries. We also help refugees resettle in the United States. IRC’s regional resettlement offices (RROs) across the country ensure new arrivals have food, shelter and clothing, working with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency through education, job training and placement, and community participation. - Placement opportunity: The Immigration Legal Intern will work under the supervision of the Immigration Officers on immigration matters related to the resettlement of refugees/asylees and other immigrant communities in the United States. The intern will provide legal and technical assistance regarding interpretation and impact of immigration law. S/he will provide analysis and interpretation of new policies issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) or other federal agencies that impact refugees/asylees/immigrants, and will assist in the development of materials and systematic tools for the immigration program.
- Responsibilities: Responsibilities of the Immigration Legal Intern vary, and may include such things as responding to legal inquiries on immigration law related issues; research and preparation of legal memos and materials; performing reviews of DHS-issued policy papers; facilitating the development of training materials on immigration or other refugee law issues; assisting with citizenship initiatives; and conducting, monitoring, and creating community outreach strategies pertaining to immigration and citizenship matters using social media.
- Requirements: The IRC is looking for someone with strong research, analytical and writing skills; the ability to prioritize, multi-task and manage time effectively; excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and strong organizational skills; proficiency in Microsoft applications (Word & Excel) and social media platforms; and fluency in written and spoken English. Foreign language ability, experience in an immigration-related field, experience organizing community events and experience in ESL or Civics instruction is preferred, but not required.
- Time commitment: At least three months commitment with flexible hours, but no less than 10 hours per week.
