What: A Conversation with the UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights, Philip Alston

The Center for Human Rights and Global Justice (CHRGJ)  is pleased to invite you to a discussion on the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights. Professors Jose Alvarez and Philip Alston will discuss the challenges and opportunities for the new mandate. Questions may include: What is extreme poverty and how is it a global issue? What roles will Special Rapporteur assume in relation to states and other actors such as NGOs and businesses? How does the Special Rapporteur respond to states that have not ratified key human rights instruments? How does this mandate compare to Alston’s previous mandate as UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions. Why would one take on this role a second time?
