On September 28, 2014, following a week of student-led strikes, the Occupy Central with Love and Peace (OCLP) movement began a campaign of civil disobedience for true universal suffrage in Hong Kong.  The protests, which have become known worldwide as the Umbrella Movement, have highlighted the tensions inherent in the city’s “One Country, Two Systems” mode of governance.  They also reflect the eruption of public discontent after more than 17 years under Beijing’s rule.

Please join the U.S.-Asia Law Institute and NYU Asia Law Society on Wednesday, October 15 for a panel discussion on Hong Kong’s governance issues following the resumption of Chinese sovereignty in 1997 and the reasons for the current protest campaign.  The panel will also discuss what may lie ahead for Hong Kong and Beijing, and potential lessons for Macau and Taiwan.

Panelists:
Jerome A. Cohen, Co-Director, U.S.-Asia Law Institute
Carl Minzner, Professor of Law, Fordham University School of Law
Madeline Earp, Research Analyst, Freedom House
Alvin Y.H. Cheung, Visiting Scholar, U.S.-Asia Law Institute

The event will take place from 5:00-6:30 pm in Vanderbilt Hall (40 Washington Square South), Room 204.

Please send your RSVP to Michael Chenkin at michael.chenkin@nyu.edu if you plan to attend.
