The Center for Human Rights and Global Justice and the Law Students for Human Rights invite you to join us for a screening of Al Jazeera’s “Haiti in the Time of Cholera” followed by a discussion on Georges v. United Nations. The panel will feature Sebastian Walker (Correspondent, Al Jazeera Fault Lines), Singeli Agnew (Producer/Cinematographer, Al Jazeera Fault Lines), and Beatrice Lindstrom (Staff Attorney, Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti).
George v. United Nations 1:13-CV-7146 is the ongoing case against the UN, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and former head of UN’s Haiti mission Edmond Mulet, alleging that they negligently introduced cholera to Haiti in 2010. The argument will address jurisdictional questions, including UN immunity.
Haiti in a Time of Cholera, an Emmy winning film, follows Sebastian Walker as he travels to Haiti to report on the death and the pain caused by the cholera outbreak, as well as the fight for compensation for the victims of the epidemic. Walker then travels to the United Nations headquarters in New York to question those responsible for bringing the disease to Haiti, where it has infected over 700,000 and killed nearly 8,000. The documentary also features Al Jazeera’s extensive interviews with the lawyers at Bureau des Avocats Internationaux (BAI) and the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti, and with Haitian clients pursuing accountability through the cholera litigation.
