Innovation without Regulation: How Necessary is Intellectual Property Protection?

Friday November 21, 2014
9:00 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.
Greenberg Lounge

The purpose of the symposium is to address the underlying policy concerns supporting intellectual property regulation in light of varying industry norms and market forces suggesting that such regulation may be redundant. By establishing a wide-ranging board of presenters, we hope to provide varying perspectives on the application of intellectual property theories in various creative fields. Our panelists include academics (Professors Christopher Sprigman,  Jason Schultz, Amy Adler, and Jessica Silbey), active practitioners (Barbara Kolsun, General Counsel at Stuart Weitzman, Lee Sporn, General Counsel at Michael Kors, Orin Snyder, partner at Gibson Dunn, and Charles Valauskas, partner at Valauskas Corder LLC), and people representing the fields under discussion (comedian Jim Mendrinos, MIT Technology Licensing Officer Daniel Dardani, fashion designer Brandon Sun, and Chef Rebecca Charles). The symposium will specifically focus on these fields as they are either attempting to gain protection under the IP umbrella (food and fashion) or leave that space (open source software and comedy).
