Michael J. Kelly will be our guest speaker for the Amy and Brian Schorr Family Luncheon Speaker Series on Monday, February 2nd, 2015.

Lunch will be served at 12:30 pm in Furman Hall 210 and the presentation will begin at 12:45 pm.

Michael J. Kelly is a Managing Principal, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of Monarch Alternative Capital LP, a private investment firm with approximately $4.8 billion in assets under management.  The firm’s focus is primarily on the debt of distressed and bankrupt companies.  As General Counsel, Mr. Kelly is involved in substantially all legal aspects of Monarch’s business, including fund investments, compliance matters and internal operations.  As Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Kelly leads the Accounting, Fund Operations and Technology teams.

Prior to joining Monarch in 2010, Mr. Kelly was a partner at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP where he spent approximately twenty-two years in the Business Reorganization and Restructuring Department.  There he was involved in many well-known bankruptcy cases including Adelphia, AMF Bowling, Calpine, CCS Medical, Classic Communications, Converse, Delphi, Integrated Resources, Lehman Brothers, Maxxim Medical, Petrie Retail, Refco, Sea Containers, Spheris, Starter Corporation, The Grand Union Company and Vencor.  During his tenure at Willkie Farr & Gallagher, Mr. Kelly served as a Hiring Partner and was a member of a number of firm wide committees, including the Professional Personnel Committee, Technology Committee, Conflicts Committee and Staff Committee.   Additionally, he previously taught a Bankruptcy, Workouts, and Reorganization course at New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies, Center for Finance, Law and Taxation.

Mr. Kelly graduated with a B.A. from SUNY, Albany in 1985 and a JD from NYU Law School in 1988, where he was Order of the Coif and a member of the Journal of International Law & Politics.
