Catholic hospitals receive billions of taxpayer dollars, comprise 10 of the 25 largest health care systems in this country, and house nearly one in nine hospital beds in the United States. Yet all Catholic-sponsored hospitals, and some Catholic-affiliated hospitals, are bound by the “Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services,” which are issued by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and enforced by local bishops. The Catholic Directives prohibit a range of reproductive health services, including contraception, sterilization, many infertility treatments, and abortion—even when a woman’s health or life is jeopardized by a pregnancy.
The ACLU is in the midst of several cutting-edge lawsuits challenging these harmful practices. Join ACLU Staff Attorney Julia Kaye (’13) and Law Students for Reproductive Justice for a discussion on Catholic hospitals and the practical and legal implications of religiously motivated denials of care.
