Office of the Appellate Defender, a non-profit law firm dedicated to providing high quality client centered appellate and post-conviction representation to indigent persons appealing felony convictions, is hosting its twentieth annual FIRST MONDAY IN OCTOBER, a mock Supreme Court argument. The case to be argued is Thomas v. New York, a case that raises the questions about whether the police may use deceptions during interrogations of suspects, and whether a defendant who claims his confession is false, may introduce expert testimony on the factors that might contribute to a false confession.
Barry C. Scheck, Co-Founder and Co-Director (with Peter Neufeld) of the Innocence Project, a Professor of Law at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, and partner in the law firm Neufeld, Scheck & Brustin, LLP. and Paul Shechtman, partner at Zuckerman Spaeder LLP, where he represents individuals, corporations and municipal agencies in a wide range of federal and state criminal and regulatory investigations, will argue Thomas v. New York, and will be honored with the Gould Award for Outstanding Oral Advocacy.
The Honorable Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick of Greenberg Traurig, LLP, will act as Chief Justice. Zachary W. Carter (Dorsey & Whitney LLP), Evan R. Chesler (Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP), Evan A. Davis (Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton), Meir Feder (Jones Day), Samuel W. Seymour (Sullivan & Cromwell LLP), Theodore M. Shaw (Fulbright & Jaworski), Kathleen M. Sullivan (Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP), and Maria T. Vullo (Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP), will serve as Associate Justices.
