Dear 3L’s,
As we announced last month, Gideon’s Promise has invited us to participate in the Law School Partnership Project, http://gideonspromise.org/law-schools/law-school-partnership-project/. Through this program, one or two 2014 graduates will be paid a stipend by NYU School of Law to subsidize work for a year at a southern public defense office, with a guarantee of employment by that office at the end of the fellowship year. The fellows will also participate in the Gideon’s Promise training program.
The participating offices to which NYU students may apply are listed below.

LOUISIANA
Lafayette Parish Public Defender Program, Lafayette, LA
Orleans Public Defender, New Orleans, LA

(You may notice that Birmingham, Alabama is also participating, and if you are very interested in that office, please reach out to Rachel Peckerman as soon as possible, at Rachel.peckerman@nyu.edu; you may have to complete your application at an expedited rate, due to Alabama’s early Bar registration deadline.)
In order to apply for this program, please complete the following steps by February 7, 2014, at 4:00 pm: (note that this deadline is during the PILC Fair and you should plan on completing your applications in advance)

Because this is a new program, we are operating on a condensed timeline and thus must ask that all applicants hold open the timeslot of Friday, February 14, 2:30-5:30 pm for potential interviews. You will find out whether you have been granted an interview by Wednesday, February 12. The interviewers will be Professors Erin Murphy and David Patton. Finalists selected by NYU will be notified by Monday, February 17, whereupon Gideon’s Promise and the partner offices will conduct further interviews, make the ultimate selections, and notify the chosen fellows directly.
If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Peckerman, Rachel.peckerman@nyu.edu, before January 17, and Linda Smalls, at smallsl@exchange.law.nyu.edu after January 17.
Best wishes,
PILC
