The Securities and Exchange Commission will accept 1L applications for the 2014 Summer Honors Intern Program from December 2, 2013 to February 3, 2014.  The SEC will hire volunteer interns in Washington DC, New York, Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, Salt Lake City, and San Francisco.  See the SEC Web page about the program.  See the USAJobs site for details about how to apply.  You will email your application to the offices where you would like to be considered.

The program is highly competitive.  About 150 2Ls and 1Ls are hired from law schools around the country.  The intern program provides students with responsibilities and experiences that promote their careers as lawyers and contribute to their future success in private practice, government agencies and other paths.  Over the course of the ten-week program, students work with SEC staff on projects particular to the specific division or office to which they are hired.  Further, students participate in seminars/workshops on various aspects of the federal securities laws.

We have high expectations for our interns, often assigning them the same work we would give a newly-hired staff attorney.  Students assist with tasks such as drafting regulations, reviewing filings, or preparing for interviews and testimony.  They spend hours every day with line attorneys, and they support senior executives.  For information about the roles played by the SEC’s interns, please see our ”Division/Office Snapshots” or a video of prior interns talking about their experiences.

Law students who apply to the Washington DC headquarters are automatically considered by all of the groups there, including the five divisions of Corporation Finance, Economic and Risk Analysis, Enforcement, Investment Management, and Trading & Markets and the five offices of Compliance Inspections and Examinations, Equal Employment Opportunity, General Counsel, Inspector General, and International Affairs.  If you are applying to the Washington DC headquarters, please indicate up to three preferred offices and divisions in your cover letter.  For more information about the offices and divisions, please see our ”Division/Office Snapshots” or the general descriptions of the various offices.

Apply early because applications will be considered on a rolling basis.  For more information about the Summer Honors Program, see the SEC’s links above or email Tamika Cambridge at cambridget@sec.gov.
