Clerkship Applications (3Ls)

If you are interested in clerking the Judicial Clerkship Office (JCO) encourages you to begin applying for clerkship positions for the 2015 term now.  We recommend registering on OSCAR (https://oscar.symplicity.com) as soon as possible. A number of judges already have posted listings on OSCAR and (if you are interested in applying to those judges) we recommend that you submit applications to those judges now. In addition, our office will mail your paper applications to those judges who have not posted listings on OSCAR.

As you may recall, in past years there was a federal law clerk hiring plan which dictated when current students could apply for clerkships. On January 13, 2014, the Administrative Office of the courts announced that the federal hiring plan has been eliminated and that 2L students can submit applications now. As a result, we believe several judges will be hiring 2L students, 3Ls, and alumni now and are likely not to wait until the spring or summer to hire clerks as they have done in past years when there was a hiring plan.

Attached are the Judicial Clerkship Handbook and Appendices. The Handbook has very detailed information about applying for clerkships and should answer many of your questions. The Appendices list judges who have hired NYU graduates along with email addresses for many of the graduates. Applicants have found the Appendices helpful when creating a list of judges to whom they will apply.

If clerking is something you would like to do, we are here to provide the counseling and application support to assist you with the process. If you would like to schedule an appointment with Michelle Cherande (via telephone or in-person) please call 212-998-6090. In addition, please feel free to email Michelle at michelle.cherande@nyu.edu or Jim at james.nesbitt@nyu.edu if you have specific questions about your applications or the application process.
