Peer Tutoring Program: Requesting a Tutor Begins Wednesday, September 9

The Office of Student Affairs offers a tutoring program for students who are struggling academically, or who have missed a substantial amount of class time due to illness or other personal problems.

In considering whether to request a tutor, it is highly advised that students first meet with a class teaching assistant.  Teaching assistants often are in the best position to provide practical guidance.

Our free, confidential tutoring service is open to all JD and LLM students who have demonstrated need for tutoring.  These sessions are designed to assist students who are experiencing specific difficulties in a particular subject, or who  would like guidance with respect to study, outlining or exam-taking skills.
Tutors are fellow students who have demonstrated academic excellence in an academic area(s) and whenever possible,  students are assigned to tutors who had the same professor for the course.

Tutoring takes place at mutually convenient times, usually 2-3 hours per week.

Due to the limited number of available tutors, students may request tutoring for a maximum of two courses.

Please note: because we rely on student volunteers to act as tutors, we may not be able to assign a tutor in every case,  but we will make every effort to do so. Requests for tutors in more advanced classes can be difficult to fulfill. If we are unable to find you a tutor, we encourage you to speak with your professor and his or her teaching assistant about your specific difficulties.

The Fall 2015 Tutoring Program is open for requests beginning Wednesday, September 9 to Friday, November 13, 2015.  To register, please click here.

For questions please email law.studentaffairs@nyu.edu.

The Brennan Center for Justice presents:

Marriage Equality on Trial
A Book Talk with Professor Kenji Yoshino

Tuesday, September 15
6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Lipton Hall, NYU School of Law
108 West Third Street
(between Sullivan St. and MacDougal St.)
New York, NY 10012

Professor Kenji Yoshino will discuss his book, Speak Now: Marriage Equality on Trial, which tells the definitive story of Hollingsworth v. Perry, the trial that will stand as the most potent argument for marriage equality. Speak Now tells the story of a watershed trial that unfolded over twelve tense days in California in 2010. A trial that legalized same-sex marriage in our most populous state. A trial that interrogated the nature of marriage, the political status of gays and lesbians, the ideal circumstances for raising children, and the ability of direct democracy to protect fundamental rights. A trial that stands as the most potent argument for marriage equality this nation has ever seen.

Try out for the NYU Teams to International Humanitarian Law Competitions: Jean-Pictet and Clara Barton

Interested in international humanitarian law? Consider joining an NYU Team to one of two 2016 competitions: The Jean-Pictet Competition on International Humanitarian Law and the Clara Barton International Humanitarian Law Competition. There will be an information meeting about how to become a member of the NYU Teams to these competitions on Tuesday, September 15, at 12:30-1:15 PM in Wilf Hall, Room 513. All full-time NYU law students based in New York are eligible to apply to be a member of the NYU Teams.

The Jean-Pictet Competition on International Humanitarian Law is hosted by the International Committee of the Red Cross and is a unique opportunity to gain in-depth and hands-on knowledge of international humanitarian law (IHL).  The competition is a week-long training event on IHL, consisting in “taking law out of the books”, by simulations and role plays, allowing the Competition jury to evaluate teams’ theoretical knowledge and practical understanding of IHL. The situations are founded on fictitious but realistic scenarios of armed conflict. Interested students should consult the competition website at http://www.concourspictet.org/index_en.htm for further information. The 2016 Jean Pictet Competition will be held on March 19 to 26 in Évian-les-Bains, France

The Clara Barton International Humanitarian Law Competition is in its third year and is hosted by the American Red Cross. It follows the model of the Jean-Pictet Competition.  Interested students should consult the competition website at http://www.redcross.org/rulesofwar/clara-barton-international-humanitarian-law-competition. The Clara Barton Competition will be held on March 12-15, 2016 in Seattle, Washington.

NYU School of Law will select an NYU Team to compete in both competitions. This process is coordinated by the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice (CHRGJ). Each team will be comprised of three law students. It will be the responsibility of both NYU Teams to apply to participate in the relevant Competition and if accepted, to prepare itself for the Competition. All full-time NYU law students based in New York are eligible to apply to be a member of the NYU Teams. The Hauser Global Law School Program will pay the registration fee and transportation expenses for each Team; both Competitions provide housing and food for participants during the event.

The selection of the NYU Teams will not guarantee participation in either the Pictet or Barton Competitions. The Team will be required to complete a separate, substantive application process that will be defined by the competition organizers, who ultimately decide which teams are invited to compete. The 2016 Pictet application will be due no later than November 19, 2015. The 2016 Barton application will be due no later than November 13, 2015.

Again, there will be an information meeting about how to become a member of the NYU Teams to the Pictet and Barton Competitions on Tuesday, September 15, at 12:30-1:15 PM in Wilf Hall, Room 513.

The application for inclusion on the NYU Teams for both competitions can be found on the CHRGJ website: http://chrgj.org/opportunities/students/jean-pictet-competition/. Applications are due by noon on Monday, September 21. After a review of the applications, finalists will be selected and interviewed during the week of September 28, with selection of the NYU Teams thereafter.

In summary: All full-time NYU law students based in New York are eligible to apply to be members of the NYU Teams to the Jean-Pictet and Clara Barton Competitions. Applications are due on Monday, September 21, by noon.

If you have questions, please contact Tish Armstrong at CHRGJ at tish.armstrong@nyu.edu.
