Lederman Fellowship Program in Law, Economics, and Business Seeking Applications

$

0

The Fellowship provides an opportunity to work closely with NYU Law faculty and participate in a series of collaborative workshops designed to help you write a research paper on a topic of your choice.

All 2L students are encouraged to apply! The deadline for submitting applications is November 10, 2015.  Fellowship information and application materials are available here.

Lederman Fellowship Information:

Summary of program.  Lederman Fellows will take a series of courses that provide a foundation in the concepts and methodologies of law & economics. The centerpiece of the fellowship program is a research paper in law & economics that each fellow will develop, advised by a NYU faculty member.  Fellows will participate in a series of workshops and colloquium meetings in which they present their work to the faculty directors and other fellows.  Further details on the program are provided below.

Area of study.  The field of “law & economics” is defined broadly for the purposes of the Lederman Fellowship.  A student research project can fit within the program by applying economic methodology (e.g., economic analysis, positive political theory, or empirical analysis) to a research topic in law or by examining a topic in an area of law that implicates economic issues, like corporate law or antitrust.

Program directors.  Professors Florencia Marotta-Wurgler and Ryan Bubb co-direct the fellowship program.

Eligibility.  All second-year J.D. students enrolled at NYU School of Law, as well as J.S.D. students prior to their final year at NYU, are eligible to apply.  Those selected will hold the status of Lederman Fellow in Law & Economics for their remaining time at NYU.  Applications are due in the fall of the 2L year for J.D. students, or the fall of any year prior to their final year for J.S.D. students.  See the fellowship website for the application form and the exact application deadline.

Basis for selection.  Fellows will be selected based on their demonstrated interest in law & economics and general aptitude for producing a high-quality research paper, as indicated by their research proposal, statement of interest, and transcripts.  No prior background in economics is required, only sincere interest in law & economics, broadly defined.

Faculty advisor.  To apply for the fellowship, students must have an NYU faculty member agree to advise their proposed law & economics research project for the fellowship.

Amount of award.  Fellows will be awarded $5,000 upon completion of all requirements of the program in their 3L year / the second year of the fellowship program.

Program requirements.  Current 2Ls who enter the program this year are required to complete the following program requirements.

·         2L year (first year of the fellowship program for J.S.D. students)

Spring
o   2L fellows enroll in the Colloquium on Law and Economics.

o   Milestone #5: 3L fellows submit their final paper to the program directors.

About the Forum International Short Film Competition:

The Forum on Law, Culture & Society’s annual International Short Film Competition was created in 2011 in conjunction with the annual Forum Film Festival. Independent and aspiring filmmakers from around the globe are invited to submit original short films on a legal theme. Entrants are free to construe this theme broadly and choose any subject in which the relationship between law, justice, and society can be fashioned into a unique visual story. The films can be about rights that have been denied, harms that have gone unaddressed, courtroom decisions that are in desperate need of an appeal, government regulations and statutes that are fundamentally unfair, or attempts to express what “justice” really means. (e.g., documentary, drama, animation, comedy) is permitted.

Sept. 25: Mandatory 2015 EIW Callback/Offer Tracker (“Tracker”)

Timely feedback regarding your EIW results is critically important to the accuracy of our counseling and our ability to assist you and others in the summer job search. By Wednesday, September 25 at 5:00 p.m., the Office of Career Services asks that you update the mandatory 2015 EIW Callback/Offer Tracker (“Tracker”) with the status of your interviews, callbacks, and offers pursuant to the deadlines below. Your input is critical as we begin to make calls to assist employers in making additional hiring decisions regarding NYU Law students (please see below regarding instructions for firms where you currently may be on hold). Moreover, this data is used for the Strike-A-Match session, which benefitted you as you prepared for EIW. We expect you to provide the same data for the class of 2018.

All responses are kept completely confidential.

Please follow these instructions:
1. Click on the CSM Surveys Tab to access the Tracker (https://law-nyu-csm.symplicity.com/students/). We have inputted the names of all the firms with whom you interviewed during EIW – please check for accuracy (especially with the firm’s geographic location). Please delete any firms with whom you did not interview, add any additional EIW firms that may be missing from your list, and update the total number of EIW interviews field. Complete all information about your callbacks and/or offers for each firm.

2. Fill in the “On-Hold” section of the Tracker if you are waiting to hear from a firm with whom you had a callback, and that firm would be your first-choice employer. By filling out this section, you give OCS express consent to discuss your candidacy with that employer. Associate Dean Irene Dorzback will be contacting firms to facilitate movement on their “hold lists.”

3. You may also include any individual comments in Question 5.

DEADLINES:
You should have completed the initial Tracker by 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 25, 2015. If you have not accepted an offer, you must update the Tracker EVERY WEDNESDAY, until you have accepted an offer. Students who have not completed or updated the Tracker cannot meet with an OCS counselor.

If you have read this, you qualify for the Reading Reward. This week’s prize will be a pair of movie tickets. To enter the raffle, send an email to ilana.madorsky@nyu.edu with the subject line “Reading Reward” by 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22.
