The Global Fellows Forum is at the heart of the Global Fellows Program, and represents an integral component in the Hauser Global Law School Program’s “Turn to Scholarship” initiated in 2003. The primary mission of the Global Fellows Program is the production of publishable scholarship, and the Global Fellows Forum serves as an important vehicle for facilitating the achievement of that mission.

All Global Fellows, that is Global and Senior Global Research Fellows, Global and Senior Global Fellows from Practice & Government and Post-Doctoral Global Fellows, attend the Global Fellows Forum, which features presentations of research by Global Fellows to an audience of other NYU School of Law fellows, faculty and invited guests. This provides an opportunity for Global Fellows to gather, collaborate, share ideas and provide feedback in a supportive and intellectual environment.

Please see below for our Forum schedule for the 2015-16 Academic Year. Research abstracts will be available about one week prior to each Forum date.

Pro Bono Opportunity – Wage Theft Clinics (JDs, LLMs)

$

0

Did you know that despite strong laws on the books, wage theft is still rampant in New York City, especially in the low wage labor market?  You can get training on wage theft in order to help change this situation, affecting the lives of many underrepresented New Yorkers, and earn pro bono hours towards your NY bar requirements!

Who are we? What do we do?
Make the Road New York (MRNY) has been a key provider of high quality, language appropriate, accessible civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers since 1997. The Legal Department at Make the Road tackles poverty from three angles. We address key income disruptions that keep families in poverty by helping low-wage workers collect unpaid minimum and overtime wages, by helping families access and maintain often unstable public benefits streams, and by assisting immigrants to legalize their status and thus put their families on track toward improved employment possibilities. We battle poverty’s worst effects: hunger, substandard or non-existent housing, and lack of access to decent medical care. And we work to effect change in the systems that perpetuate and exacerbate poverty by engaging in impact litigation, government agency monitoring, law reform, and policy innovation.

Our Workplace Justice Project supports low-wage workers to combat the exploitation they face daily on the job through an integrated strategy of popular education and Know Your Rights (KYR) training through workshops, individual counseling and advocacy. MRNY’s community education and legal support work are crafted to arm impacted community members with the knowledge, tools, and skills they need to tackle the problems they face.
What is the wage theft clinic?

  • Workers will come to the wage theft clinic for assistance in filing claims for unpaid wages (not being paid minimum wage, overtime, spread-of- hours or other wages they are owed under the law) with the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL).
  • Participants will be trained on November 3, 2015 from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. at our Jackson Heights office on wage theft and filing claims with the NYSDOL.
  • Participants will then volunteer in one or both of our open clinics:
    • November 12, 2015: 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.
    • November 19, 2015: 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Participants will conduct an intake and assessment of the worker’s unpaid wage claims, along with MRNY Employment attorneys, and assist the workers to fill out the necessary forms to claim their unpaid wages.

Requirements to participate

  • Participants in the clinic must be J.D. or LL.M. students and participate in the training session on November 3, 2015 from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. at our Jackson Heights office.
  • Since our clients are mostly Spanish speaking, Spanish fluency is strongly preferred.
  • Time requirements apart from the training and clinic sessions are minimal; participants should take no longer than an hour to complete the paperwork for filing a claim.

If you are interested, please send your name, telephone, email address and expected year of graduation to kyle.giller@maketheroadny.org.

We hope to see you here! You can help change a person’s life and fight systematic injustice!

3L J.D. Degree Requirements Progress Review for Graduation

$

0

In preparation for May 2016 graduation, we strongly advise that you take a moment to review your academic record to make sure that you are on track to graduate. You are responsible for making sure you are in compliance with all the graduation requirements.

Five Steps To Confirm You Are On Track For Graduation:

1. Degree Audit:
The program is available via Albert and will assist you with counting adjunct credits, determining what requirements have been completed and/or remain to be completed. We are still, however, working with the University as Degree Audit does not accurately reflect the number of non-law credits that count towards the JD degree. You must check your transcript for the correct credit allocation for non-law classes. As updates are made to Degree Audit we will keep you apprised.

See the instructions on how to generate a Degree Audit report and obtain other important Degree Audit information here.

Finally, please keep in mind that Degree Audit will be approximately two hours behind the release of ABRA results. So, if ABRA results are released at 1:30 pm, Degree Audit may not contain the most accurate information until 3:30 pm that day.

2. Degree Audit Questions:
If after reviewing Degree Audit you have questions please email us at law.acadservices@nyu.edu or call us at 212-998-6020. If you would like to speak with a counselor from Academic Services please contact by email or phone to make an appointment.

3. Review the Requirements for the Juris Doctor Degree:
You must complete at least 83 credits (which includes the required courses of Property, Constitutional Law, Professional Responsibility and Substantial Writing). Please refer to the J.D. Academic Regulations and Requirements Guide.

4. Bar Exams:
Please read the National Conference of Bar Examiners Comprehensive Guide to Bar Admissions for details on the bar requirements for your jurisdiction.

Please also review our Bar Exam Checklist for important information and deadlines concerning applying to take the bar exam.

Have a wonderful fall semester!
