Dear rising 3L,
For those of you interested in government jobs, here is time-sensitive information about early applications:
· The application window for the Department of Justice, Attorney General’s Honors is open now and will close on September 3, 2013. You may read more about the Honors Program at http://www.justice.gov/careers/legal/entry.html. (If you are planning to clerk, you can apply for a pre-clerkship summer through DOJ’s Student Legal Internship Program). Positions are available across the Department, but note that there is an especially large number of positions doing immigration law. On Wednesday, August 28, 2013 from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in Vanderbilt Hall Room 210, PILC will host Jamila Frone, Deputy Director of DOJ’s Office of Attorney Recruitment and Management, to talk about the honors program and answer student questions about the application process.
· For comprehensive information and all deadlines, see the Government Honors & Internship Handbook https://www.law.arizona.edu/career/13-14GovHonors/tablecontents.cfm – username “tim,” password “tam.” PILC has also posted Employer Summaries of many agencies and DOJ components in the document library on CSM – a great resource for applying to honors programs. Many other agencies have early deadlines coming up, and some review applications on a rolling basis, so we urge you not to wait until the last minute to apply!
· On the state level, a handful of state attorneys general have honors programs: including: California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Ohio, Oregon, and Washington state. Some of them may have early deadlines, such as Washington State’s of September 5, 2013.
· Please also remember that a substantial number of government employers will attend Fall OCI. Students should check CSM regularly as employers will continue to sign up into the school year; you will be able to view OCI information beginning August 30, 2013. During the first week of OCI, the IRS, Nassau County DA, New Jersey Office of Public Defender, New York City Law Department, U.S. State Department, and U.S. Department of Transportation will be interviewing. The deadline to upload resumes and cover letters for those employers will be Tuesday September 3, 2013 at 6pm. Note that public interest and government employers at OCI select students to interview based on the resumes and cover letters uploaded through CSM (as opposed to private firms whose interviewees are selected by lottery).
Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, September 4, 12:30 – 1:30 for PILC’s 3L Public Interest Job Search Workshop in Vanderbilt Hall Room 210 – we will be talking about honors programs, fellowships, cover letters, interviews, and everything else you need to know to get a great public interest job!
We would also like to welcome Heidi Gilchrist who has joined PILC as new government counselor. Heidi had previously been working the past year for the Law School’s Academic Careers Program. She is available to meet on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
We generally recommend that you wait to meet with a PILC counselor until after the September 4 meeting, so we will be better able to help you. However, if you are applying for jobs with earlier deadlines or have time sensitive questions we will of course be happy to talk with you sooner! PILC’s drop-in hours will be Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. Note that PILC will hold extended drop-in hours from 3:00 – 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 29, to help people with DOJ Honors Program applications. Please call 212-998-6686 or stop by our office when you are ready to schedule an appointment to meet with a counselor.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
All the best,
Public Interest Law Center
