Dear rising 2L,
We hope you are having a great summer. It may seem early, but it is already time to start thinking about your 2L summer internship.
· The application window for the Department of Justice, Summer Legal Internship Program is open now and will close on September 3, 2013. You may read more about SLIP at http://www.justice.gov/careers/legal/summer-intern.html. On Wednesday, August 28, 2013 from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in Vanderbilt Hall Room 210, PILC will host Jamila Frone, Deputy Director of DOJ’s Office of Attorney Recruitment and Management, to talk about the honors program and answer student questions about the application process. Note that, due to budget constraints, a smaller number of components are participating in SLIP this year. Never fear – volunteer internships at DOJ are also fantastic, and supervisors tell us the work is identical for SLIP and volunteer interns.
· For comprehensive information on government honors programs, see the Government Honors & Internship Handbook https://www.law.arizona.edu/career/13-14GovHonors/tablecontents.cfm – username “tim,” password “tam.” PILC has also posted Employer Summaries of many agencies and DOJ components in the document library on CSM – a great resource for applying to honors programs.
· Please note some programs have very early deadlines (and some have not been posted). The FTC’s Bureau of Competition will require 2Ls to apply on USAJOBS.gov before August 19, 2013 (see https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/348868000), in addition to uploading a resume and cover letter through CSM for OCI. In addition, for the Environmental Protection Agency and Government Accountability Office have 2L deadlines of August 30, 2013.
· Deadlines for other agencies are usually in September and October or rolling. For the agencies that review on a rolling basis, we expect the number of applications to be high, so there can be a real benefit to applying early! The CIA hires on a rolling basis, but many of their slots are usually filled by the time they come to OCI in the fall, so they encourage interested NYU Law students to apply NOW. A number of agencies have not yet announced their deadlines.
· Please also remember that a substantial number of government employers will attend Fall OCI. Students should check CSM regularly beginning on August 30, 2013 as employers will continue to sign up into the school year. During the first week of OCI, the IRS, New Jersey Public Defender, New York City Law Department, and State Department will be interviewing. The deadline to upload resumes and cover letters for those employers will be Tuesday September 3, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. Note that public interest and government employers at OCI select students to interview based on the resumes and cover letters uploaded through CSM (rather than via lottery).
We would also like to welcome Heidi Gilchrist who has joined PILC as new government counselor. Heidi had previously been working for the Law School’s Academic Careers Program. She is available to meet on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Last but not least, please mark your calendars for Monday, September 9, 2013 12:30 – 1:30 for PILC’s 2L Public Interest Job Search Workshop in DH Lipton Hall – we will be talking about your job search strategy, thinking ahead to the post-graduate search, and everything else you need to know to get a great public interest job! Given the economy, this meeting will also focus on strategies for maximizing your 2L summer for your post-graduate search. You will be glad to know that this is the ONLY meeting required of 2Ls to obtain summer funding; 2L summer funding is $6500.
We generally recommend that you wait to meet with a PILC counselor until after the September 9 meeting, so we will be better able to help you. However, if you are applying for jobs with early deadlines or have time sensitive questions we will of course be happy to talk with you sooner! PILC’s drop-in hours will be Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. Note that PILC will hold extended drop-in hours from 3:00 – 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 29, to help people with questions related to the DOJ Honors Program. Please call 212-998-6686 or stop by our office when you are ready to schedule an appointment to meet with a counselor. Enjoy the rest of your summer!
