In Fragile Democracies: Contested Power in the Era of Constitutional Courts, renowned professor and scholar Samuel Issacharoff examines the often-overlooked role of constitutional courts in transitional democracies around the world in the past twenty-five years since the fall of the Berlin Wall. While “fragile democracies” in Eastern Europe, Africa, and East Asia face renewed threats, the world has witnessed the failed democratic promises of the Arab Spring. Issacharoff asks what lessons can be drawn from these struggles, and what conditions are needed to prevent the collapse of democracy. Coined “an ambitious and wide-ranging achievement” by David Landau of the International Journal of Constitutional Law, Fragile Democracies argues that the most significant antidote to authoritarianism is the presence of strong constitutional courts.

Join the Brennan Center for an engaging discussion with one of the pioneers in the law of the political process and the author of this new and exciting book.
