The Diplomacy and Diversity Fellowship application is now available! The Fellowship is an educational program for 24 American and European graduate students to explore the changing international dynamics of diplomacy and diversity.  Dividing their time between Washington, DC and Paris, the Fellows will learn how American and European governments and societies are responding to these changing dynamics.  In each city, Fellows will meet with leaders in government, business and NGOs to explore and research topics such as: humanitarian intervention, the impact of the ongoing economic crisis on minorities (starting in 2008), US and EU migration and border policies, Roma issues in Europe, new media and “digital diplomacy,” women’s issues, human trafficking, global LBGTQ rights, and the effect of climate change on vulnerable communities. In addition, in Washington DC, Fellows will be hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations for multiple sessions on professional development focused on building skills, networks and knowledge for foreign policy careers.

The program’s guiding mission is to increase awareness of the importance of diversity in diplomacy and other international fields and to encourage the careers of professionals from minority backgrounds in foreign affairs.  The four-week program will take place from May 17 to June 14, 2014.  (Note that these dates are firm; students should not apply unless they will be done with final exams and able to begin the program on May 17. Similarly, it might not be ideal for graduating students planning to sit for the July bar, as bar study normally begins in early June.)

Humanity in Action, an international educational organization, covers all costs of the program including participation, hotels, flights, local transportation and some food. Fellows will stay in double rooms in hotels in Washington, DC and Paris.  In addition, each Fellow attending an institution of higher education in the United States will receive an educational supplement of $2,000.

Applications and additional information about the Fellowship are available on the Humanity in Action website at: http://www.humanityinaction.org/programs/10-the-diplomacy-and-diversity-fellowship/310-about

Applicants of minority backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

Completed applications are due no later than Friday, January 31, 2014.
