Critical Clerkship Deadline – January 23 (2Ls)

On January 13, 2014, the Administrative Office of the US Courts announced that the Federal Law Clerk Hiring Plan “has been eliminated” and that no further dates are being set in connection with the Plan. As a result, many judges are beginning to consider 2L clerkship applications now. We will be sending additional information about the application process in another email.

Since there is no longer any Plan, we have decided to run the 2L faculty recommendation match immediately. If you plan to apply for a clerkship as a 2L and you have NOT already secured recommendation letters from faculty, you must participate in the match now. If you participate in the match we will try to match you with three faculty recommenders who can write recommendation letters on your behalf.

If you haven’t considered clerking, it’s not too late to get into the process. Below please find a link to the Judicial Clerkship Handbook for Class of 2015 Students. This handbook contains important information about the clerkship application process.

The deadlines for participating in the match are as follows:

January 21:

bidding for recommendations opens

January 23:

deadline to submit recommendation bids, resume, and transcript; closes at 11:59 PM on 1/23/14

January 30:

results of match released to students

February 5:

deadline to submit DRAFT writing sample and clerkship recommenders questionnaire

February 5:

deadline to drop any matched recommenders

Please note: the writing sample and resume submitted in connection with the match can be in draft format and are ONLY given to your matched recommenders in order to help them write as strong a recommendation letter as possible. The clerkship recommenders questionnaire, which is due on February 5, is attached to this email.

The instructions for submitting bids for recommenders are at the end of this email.

If you have already secured recommendations, please email Jim at james.nesbitt@nyu.edu as soon as possible to let us know who will be writing on your behalf.

If you have questions about how to use the matching system or would like to add a professor to the match, please contact Jim at james.nesbitt@nyu.edu.  If you have brief questions about how to rank the professors in your match, Michelle will hold drop-in appointments on Tuesday, 1/21, from 3:00-5:00 and on Wednesday, 1/22, from 10:00-12:00.  The sign-up sheet will be posted with the receptionist 15 minutes before the start of each session.

Finally, next week we will send an email to all clerkship applicants with instructions for preparing and submitting paper and OSCAR applications.

Sincerely,
Michelle Cherande & Jim Nesbitt
The Judicial Clerkship Office

Instructions for Submitting Bids for Clerkship Recommendation Match:

A. POSTING AN UPDATED RESUME AND TRANSCRIPT: Before you submit your list of potential recommenders, you must upload your updated resume and transcript to your CSM account.  In addition, you must complete the clerkship registration form on CSM (available from the “Clerkships” top link). To upload your resume and transcript, please follow these steps:

  1. Login to CSM at https://law-nyu-csm.symplicity.com/students
  2. Select the “Documents” top link
  3. Click the “Add New” button
  4. In the “Label” box, enter a title for the document your are uploading  (e.g. Clerkship Resume or Unofficial Transcript)
  5. Select the document type
  6. Click the “Browse” button to select a document from your computer
  7. Click the “Submit” button; the document will convert to PDF format, if it is not already in PDF format
  8. Review the converted document

B. SUBMITTING REQUESTS FOR RECOMMENDATION LETTERS: Please note that we are using the On-Campus Interviewing module (OCI) in CSM for the matching selection because it has a lottery system. Please follow these steps to select and rank your recommenders:

  1. Login to CSM at https://law-nyu-csm.symplicity.com/students
  2. Click the “OCI” top link
  3. In the session field, select “2014 Clerkship Recommendation Match”
  4. Make sure that “Show All” displays in the Employers drop-down menu, then press the search button
  5. To view/select a professor, click the “Review” button to the left of the Professor’s name; Under the Bid/Applications Details text box to the right, select a bid number (rank), select a resume from the drop-down box, select a transcript from the drop-down box, and click the “Apply” button to submit your bid
  6. If you make a mistake and do NOT wish to bid for this professor, click on the “Back to List” button to return to the list of faculty and continue selecting your recommenders
  7. You must rank FIVE professors; however, if you want to be matched with only two (2) professors because a non-NYU recommender (such as an employer) will write on your behalf then you must rank FOUR faculty members. In addition, please notify Jim by email at james.nesbitt@nyu.edu that you need only 2 matches.

If you have questions about how to use the matching system or would like to add a professor to the match, please contact Jim at james.nesbitt@nyu.edu.
