The Classical Liberal Institute and the NYU Journal of Law & Liberty cordially invite you to our upcoming conference, “The Classical Liberal Constitution.”
Date: Monday, February 10, 2014
Time: 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. (reception to follow)
Location: Lipton Hall, located at 108 West 3rd Street, New York, New York, 10012
This conference will discuss The Classical Liberal Constitution: The Uncertain Quest for Limited Government, the new book by Professor Richard A. Epstein, Laurence A. Tisch Professor of Law and Director of the Classical Liberal Institute at NYU Law. In The Classical Liberal Constitution, Epstein employs close textual reading, historical analysis, and political and economic theory to urge a return to the classical liberal theory of governance that animated the framers’ original text, and to the limited government this theory supports. Grounded in the thought of Locke, Hume, Madison, and other Enlightenment figures, the classical liberal tradition emphasized federalism, restricted government, separation of powers, property rights, and economic liberties.
Co-sponsored by the Classical Liberal Institute at NYU Law and the NYU Journal of Law and Liberty, the conference will bring together scholars from around the country to analyze and debate The Classical Liberal Constitution. Focusing on three different aspects of the book, panelists will debate Professor Epstein’s theory of constitutional interpretation, constitutional structure, and individual rights. The conference is free to attend and open to the public.
