Lauren Burke, an energetic and inspiring NYU Law ’09 alumna, Founder of Atlas: DIY, Developing Immigrant Youth, and PILC Practitioner-in-Residence, will be hosting CHILLS every Friday. Each week CHILLS will offer wine and cheese and a chance to chat with Lauren and a rotating group of NYU Law graduates who are now public interest practitioners. This week Lauren will be joined by Jess Braverman, NYU Law ’09 alumna and Staff Attorney with the Legal Aid Society’s Juvenile Rights Practice.

This week Lauren will be joined by Rebecca Press of Central American Legal Assistance (CALA) and Maureen Schad, Pro Bono Coordinator at Chadbourne and Park, to discuss the many ways of being an immigration practitioner. Both Rebecca and Maureen are not only experienced attorneys with impressive resumes, but loving parents whose partner’s are also working in the public interest. Rebecca Press
Rebecca Press graduated from Oberlin College with a B.A. in History in 2002. After college, she worked for one year as a legal assistant with the New York Association for New Americans, and for three years as an immigration paralegal with the Safe Horizon Immigration Law Project. Rebecca received her J.D. from the New York University School of Law in 2009. Following law school, Rebecca worked as a staff attorney at The Door – A Center for Alternatives, where she represented undocumented youth in affirmative and defensive applications for immigration relief. She then clerked at the New York Immigration Court through the Attorney General’s Honors Program. Currently, Rebecca is a staff attorney at Central American Legal Assistance, where she represents undocumented immigrants in removal proceedings, with a particular focus on asylum and cancellation of removal for non lawful permanent residents.
Maureen Ketler Schad
Maureen Ketler Schad represents youth in family and immigration courts as the Pro Bono Attorney at Chadbourne & Parke. Until recently, she was a senior attorney at The Door’s Legal Services Center, where she represented youth in a wide range of immigration and family court proceedings. Maureen graduated magna cum laude from New York University School of Law, where she worked with NYU’s Immigrant Rights Clinic, Make The Road New York, The Legal Aid Society’s Immigration Unit, the New York Asian Women’s Center, and Immigration Equality. From 2001-2004, Maureen worked at The Legal Aid Society as a public benefits and housing advocate. Before that, she was a founding program coordinator of Project HEALTH/ Health Leads, creating resource centers for adolescents and families at public hospitals in Boston and New York. She is a graduate of Harvard College.
