Start of Classes Reminders Checklist for Upper-Year Students

Welcome back! We hope that you had a wonderful summer. Classes begin Wednesday, August 26. Daily Add/Drop begins on August 21 at 1:30 pm and continues each day between 1:30 pm until 9:30 am the following morning until September 3 at 9:30 am. If you would like to make a change to your schedule during this time you may add/drop classes and/or place yourself on a waitlist.

Here is a brief checklist to ensure that you have not missed important matters regarding the start of classes.

Class Assignments

NYUClasses – Check NYUClasses for syllabi and assignments for any courses for which you are registered. It is important to check NYU Classes on a regular basis as professors may post new assignments and information at any time. Please note that not all faculty post assignments. You should email law.helpdesk@nyu.edu if you have any issues or difficulties with accessing NYU Classes.

Course Syllabi or Early Semester Assignments – Not registered for a course but considering registering during add/drop? Check the Course Syllabi and Early Semester Assignments web page.

Attendance: You should check the course descriptions of your classes regarding attendance. There are some professors who state that they will drop students if they miss the first class.

Schedules of Classes and Course Requirements: Please review the Fall 2015 course schedule, course requirements, exam schedule, pre-/co-requisites and any information which is stated in the course description. Be sure to check the course schedule for any revised room assignments.

Online Course Updates: All changes in the curriculum will and have been posted on the Course Updates web site. You must check the site regularly for updated course information such as new courses, canceled courses, corrections to the schedule, as well as to review requirements, dates, deadlines, final examination information, etc.

Closed Seminars/Colloquia/Simulations: The law school rules permit faculty to admit up to two students to seminars/colloquia/simulations during the first class meeting (depending on space availability in the room) outside the regular registration procedures. However, please remember that the limit is two students regardless of the number of instructors, and that we will admit only the first two students who come with permission from the instructor. Please obtain an add/drop form from your program office, have the professor sign the same and return it to your program office immediately. The instructors should not admit any students until after the first meeting because students may be able to gain admission online using ABRA.

Calendars: Please pay careful attention to the dates and deadlines in the Academic Calendar and Registration Calendar.

We hope you have a wonderful semester!  If you have any questions, please contact your program office.

Do You Want to Be an NYU Law Student Blogger?

$

NYU School of Law’s Office of Communications is looking for a few talented student writers to blog about their opinions, ideas, and experiences for Life at NYU Law, the Law School’s official student blog.

The position is unpaid. Bloggers will write one or two short posts a month, gaining an opportunity to reach a wide audience and showcase their abilities as legal thinkers and writers.

While this blog is geared toward prospective students, it will be heavily publicized and high-profile, and read by prospective employers, alumni, faculty, peer schools, the media, and anyone else who visits the Law School website.

JD, LLM, and JSD students are all encouraged to apply. Interested? E-mail the Office of Communications a paragraph or two explaining why you want to be a blogger for the official NYU Law student blog, and include all of your contact information. The deadline for applying for Fall 2015 is September 4, 2015. Please send your application (and any questions) to Atticus Gannaway at atticus.gannaway@nyu.edu.

Any lingering questions before you apply? Tracy Huang ’14 can tell you about her experience as an NYU Law student blogger. E-mail her at tracyhuang25@gmail.com. In the meantime, Tracy has this to say:

“Why should you blog for NYU Law? Well, it’s a lot of fun! First, blogging was a great way for me to contribute to the greater law school community. I am able to reach a diverse audience–everyone from prospective students to current students to alumni–and share my experiences in hopes that the audience can use it as a springboard for their own adventures. Second, it has been a great way for me to enrich my own law school experience. Because I always wanted something interesting to say, I became more inclined to observe and reflect carefully on what was around me for the last three years. I am glad I chose to pursue this activity during law school.”

Fall OCI is a six week on-campus recruiting program during which employers conduct screening interviews with NYU Law students on campus. The program is administered via CSM (https://law-nyu-csm.symplicity.com/students). For law firms and private sector employers, interviews are assigned through a lottery, based on students’ ranked preferences. ALL public interest and government employers will pre-select their Fall OCI schedules. Students will still bid to interview with all public interest and government employers however, interviewees will be selected by the employer.

Bidding for interviews occurs on a week-by-week basis, so we ask that you monitor the system closely to determine if you would like to bid each week. You can request interviews with employers beginning the Friday two and a half weeks prior to their scheduled interview date. Bidding will close the following Monday, two weeks prior to the employer’s scheduled interview date. Week 1 bidding will open on Friday, August 28.

We recommend that all students who are uncertain of their summer or permanent employment plans register to interview with those employers of interest. In this economy, it is best to cast a wide net and meet with as many employers as possible!

Full-time students are eligible to request a deferment of their jury duty service. If you receive a summons for jury duty, bring the original summons to the Office of Academic Services no later than one week prior to the date your service is to begin. We will ask you to fill out a short form requesting New York University to send a letter to the Court requesting a deferment on the grounds that you are a full-time student. We are able to write this letter for you as long as the dates of your jury service occur when classes are in session.

If you are summoned to serve jury duty when classes are not in session such as during Spring Break, between the end of fall exams and the beginning of classes in the spring semester, or during the summer, you must request a deferment from the Court on your own.
